About
Modal is a man-made cellulose fiber and is essentially a variety of viscose. It is made by spinning reconstituted cellulose from beech trees in a modified viscose process. This process gives longer cellulose molecules which results in an improved version of viscose with better textile performance properties.
Characteristics
Modal feels fine and soft, and is very comfortable to wear. It drapes beautifully, is designed to dye just like cotton and gives very bright colored garments. In many ways it acts like cotton, but it also has some significant advantages; it is resistant to shrinkage, a notorious problem with cotton. It is also less likely to fade or to form pills as a result of friction. However, modal has poor resilience just like any other cellulose fiber, it wrinkles easily, and is more moisture absorbent than cotton.
Good to know
The Modal fabric originates from Europe and is already widely used in clothing as a replacement for cotton.
Blends
Modal is used primarily in blends with cotton, polyester or elastane because of its strength, uniformity, and absorbency.
Aftercare
Modal garments are generally very easy to care for. Wash on 60°, do not bleach, medium heat iron, can be dry cleaned, can be tumble dried on low heat.
