About
Cotton is a natural vegetable fiber that grows in the seed pod of the cotton plant. The longest fibers produce the highest quality
Cotton fabrics, such as Pima and Egyptian. The breathable textiles made from
Cotton fibers are the most commonly used quality in the world.
Cotton needs heat to grow, therefore the worlds cotton belt is located in the tropics and sub-tropics.
Characteristics
Cotton is a medium strong and soft material. It breathes well, making it optimal for usage all year round. Cotton also absorbs moisture - making it unsuitable for active wear on cold weather days as it does not release any moisture.
Good to know
Cotton can absorb 20% moisture without feeling wet, however once wet it dries slowly. It comfortable next to skin because of its fineness and softness, however it has poor elasticity and therefore it creases easily.
Blends
Blending Cotton with synthetic fibers, such as acrylic, nylon and polyester, improves the easy-care and durability of the clothing. Cotton blends with viscose or modal fibers improves the luster and uniformity, whilst preserving good moisture absorption.
Aftercare
Cotton is washable, boilable, dries slowly, can be tumble dried, can be ironed, not wrinkle resistant.
Cotton can be boiled up to 95°C, with lower temperatures for colored items 40°C.
It can be bleached with chlorine. Can be ironed on a high temperature, note that the garments should be damp.
Cotton is not sensitive to normal solvents.
Can be tumble dried.
