Why cashmere is worth the investment

Why cashmere is worth the investment

If you ask us what your next wardrobe investment should be, our answer is unanimous: a cashmere garment. Expensive? Yes, but even more valuable! With this blog, we put the price tag of cashmere into perspective.

If you were to ask us about your next wardrobe investment, our answer is unanimous: a cashmere garment. It's no coincidence that it's known as the Rolls-Royce among wool types – the luxury of cashmere is unparalleled. And yes, you pay for that. With this blog, we put that price tag into perspective so that you consider cashmere as a conscious, durable purchase rather than an expensive one.

Why is cashmere so exclusive?

Why is cashmere so exclusive?

Although the introduction of cheaper cashmere items at the leading retail chains may lead you to think otherwise, strict requirements are imposed on obtaining high-quality cashmere. The fibers must be long enough to provide the desired softness, strength, and luster, and only the hairs from the undercoat of the cashmere goat are usable. Additionally, the cashmere goat can only be combed once a year, yielding about 100 grams of usable fibers. By comparison, a sheep yields about three kilograms of wool per year, and the entire fleece is usable. Only 1% of the total wool production consists of the type of cashmere we love to wear. If that’s not exclusive, we don’t know what is…

How does cashmere differ from 'ordinary' wool?

Originally, the cashmere goat lives in the Himalayan mountains, experiencing warm summers and bitterly cold winters. As a result, cashmere naturally regulates temperature and keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer. More exquisite qualities of cashmere? The fine, long cashmere fibers are lightweight, which you'll notice not only in comfort but also in the shape retention of your garment. With proper care, your cashmere garment can last for years. So relatively speaking, it's not an expensive purchase; it's a durable one. Our personal favorites? The Cashair items from Joseph – an even more luxurious and lightweight type of cashmere. And, of course, the styles from extreme cashmere. The brand uses a slightly heavier weight of cashmere and adds a small amount of polyamide for even greater durability.

Ideally, you should wash it as little as possible. Cashmere hardly absorbs odors, so simply airing it outside is truly sufficient to refresh your garment. If washing is unavoidable, use a laundry bag and a special cashmere detergent to ensure fiber condition. Depending on the type of knit, cashmere can pill. In that case, use a fabric shaver, and your garment will be as good as new. Yes, it really is that simple.

Depending on the type of knit or the characteristics the designer has in mind, a blend with cashmere is sometimes chosen. This is not necessarily inferior to a pure cashmere knit. Even if a smaller percentage of cashmere is used, you'll still notice the benefits. You can read all about it in our blog on wool blends.
