Shorter Body Height

If you're shorter in height but want to optically lengthen your legs, opt for pants or jeans with a high waistband and long legs that hit the floor. Dark colors, straight, loose-fitting pants, and wide-leg trousers have an elongating effect. Be mindful to choose fabrics that drape smoothly and don't add volume, as bulky fabrics can make you appear wider. If you want to wear patterned pants, go for vertical stripes and avoid horizontal stripes, as they can make you appear shorter and wider. Heels can elongate your legs, especially if the pants fall over the shoes. Prefer flats? Opt for shoes in the same color as the pants.


Wearing T-shirts/sweaters/blouses tucked into your pants or jeans or opting for cropped tops can further lengthen your legs optically. Additionally, wearing a top and bottom in the same color can create an elongating effect - this can be achieved with tonal light shades or dark tones. If the pants are too long, getting them hemmed is an option, but keep in mind that this is mainly possible with pants that have a straight silhouette, skinny pants, or pants with a wide flare from the knee. Conversely, tapered pants, pants with a subtle flared hem, and pants with knee and thigh details are styles that are less easy to shorten because the proportions and original silhouette may not be maintained.

Longer Body Height

The advantage of having long legs? Virtually any pants or jeans style will work for you. The downside? You might struggle to find pants or jeans that are long enough. One tip is to measure the inseam of pants or jeans you already own that have the perfect length for you. However, ensure that these pants or jeans have a regular rise and not a dropped crotch. The best option for those with long legs is to choose mid-rise or low-rise waistbands, as a high waistband can make the legs appear even longer, especially towards the upper body. If you want to visually balance your long legs, opt for cropped pants, pants with a dropped crotch, rolled cuffs, or choose shoes in a contrasting color to the pants. Additionally, consider pairing a top and bottom in contrasting colors and experiment with horizontal prints.

Whatever your body height is, you can have proportionally long or short legs. Think of a shorter upper body with long legs or a longer upper body with shorter legs. The advice for this is similar to the tips above for shorter and longer body heights; choose the tips for a longer body height when dealing with a shorter upper body/long legs and the tips for a shorter body height when dealing with a longer upper body/shorter legs. The height of the waistband and the length of the upper garments, in particular, are crucial for achieving a balanced look.
