5 must-know tips to make your white sneakers look new again

White sneakers - we simply can’t do without them. But it remains to be a love-hate relationship. Because the euphoria of enjoying the flawless, bright white look of your brand new sneakers only lasts a few weeks. And buying a new pair every season is not in line with our thoughts on building a sustainable wardrobe. But you don't have to! With our 5 must-know tips, your white sneakers will look like new again and you’ll keep them looking new. Good news: you’ll find most of the required products at home in your kitchen cupboard. Read on quickly…

As with everything else: prevention is better than cure
- Always use an impregnation spray to protect your sneakers from dirt and moisture.
- Lubricate your (leather) sneakers regularly with neutral shoe polish or shoe grease to prevent the leather from cracking and to add a water-repellent "layer".
Despite taking precautions, stains are eventually unavoidable. Whichever method you use, it is important to remove stains as quickly as possible to prevent the stain from setting.

1. Vinegar
A true lifesaver! Pour a dash of white vinegar on a clean cloth or paper towel and gently rub the spots. Especially suitable for removing grease and mild spots.

2. Petroleum Jelly
Rub some petroleum jelly on stubborn spots in circular motions, using a soft cloth. Leave the jelly for at least 3 hours and then remove with a clean cloth. Note: only suitable for smooth leather sneakers. PS: feel free to smear on your entire sneaker, because petroleum jelly will revive your sneakers’ natural shine.
3. Baking Soda / Baby powder
Mix 1 part of baking soda or baby powder with 3 parts of water and stir until a solid paste is created. Spread the paste on your sneakers and scrub with a toothbrush. Leave for an hour and remove the mix with a damp cloth. Works for both leather and canvas sneakers.

4. Toothpaste
Use a white toothpaste (without gel) and a toothbrush to gently rub the stains. Leave the toothpaste for about 10 minutes. Then remove with a damp cloth. Perfect for cleaning leather and structured soles.

5. Replace your shoelaces
At last, not a tip for removing stains but secretly the most important one to remember. Your white sneakers will never look fresh with grimy laces. Wash your shoelaces in a pillowcase or laundry bag to prevent lint and replace when necessary. You will be amazed by the effect.
Are your white sneakers beyond rescue because of spots that have penetrated into the material too deeply? Then you have a good reason to buy a new pair.
