Which skirt (length) suits your figure best? Discover the do's and don'ts!

The skirt is loved – because a skirt is feminine, flattering and always stylish. But which skirt flatters fuller hips and thighs, and which skirt is a perfect match for long legs or short legs? Discover the do’s and don’ts and learn how to accentuate your best features and feel confident in the skirts you wear. The tips below can also be applied on the skirt length of a dress – and many (styling) tips are also applicable to all skirt lengths. Read on and learn more!

1. THE MINI-SKIRT-LENGTH
The mini-skirt features a thigh length and is – if styled correctly – the most simple piece to optically lengthen your legs. The mini-skirt is the most stylish in a straight-cut or A-line silhouette, and perfect for a dose of (youthful) femininity.

DO’S & DON’TS
- Slim legs and thighs? A fitted mini-skirt is the perfect choice for you!
- Full, wide hips and buttocks? Go for an A-line mini-skirt and avoid fitted mini-skirts in a stretchy quality. Fitted, jersey skirts will crawl up with fuller hips and buttocks.
- Fuller thighs? Don’t go for a skirt with a mini length but pick a midi- or maxi-skirt. The hem of a mini-skirt hits the thighs and accentuates them.

Styling tip
- Compensate the short length of a mini-skirt with high boots – preferably knee-high boots with a slouchy fit for instant Parisian flair.

2. THE MIDI-SKIRT-LENGTH
A midi-skirt hits the calves and is a chic and elegant choice. A pencil skirt with a midi-length accentuates your feminine shapes and an A-line midi-skirt creates a flattering and stylish silhouette – perfect for women with wider hips and thighs.

DO’S & DON’TS
- Flat buttocks and want to create more volume? Go for a pleated midi-skirt, a skirt with pockets at back or for a skirt in a firm, rigid quality. Avoid skirts in a thin quality, like satin and silk.
- Full, round hips? A pencil skirt with a midi-length isn’t the perfect match for you. Pencil skirts optically widen the hips and fuller hips can create a tapered silhouette, that makes your body look heavier. Rather choose a midi-skirt with an A-line silhouette.
- Full calves? Don’t go for a midi-skirt. This skirt length hits the calves and accentuates them. Go for a mini- or maxi-skirt.

Styling tip
- Are you a fan of pencil skirts with a midi-length, but do you feel insecure about your buttocks or hips? Create a layered look. Accentuate the waist and wear the skirt with a tucked-in top or blouse and combine with a long cardigan or blazer cardigan for a stylish, finishing touch.

3. THE MAXI-SKIRT-LENGTH
A maxi-skirt features an ankle to floor length and is often characterized by a bohemian vibe. A maxi-skirt is especially a summer favorite but is also the perfect go-to style on colder days – with the right styling.

DO’S & DON’TS
- Short legs? Choose a longer skirt length and preferably go for a maxi-skirt in a dark uni-color, in combination with a high waist. This has an optically leg-lengthening effect.
- Long legs? Lucky you! Maxi-skirts with a print are the perfect match. Do you have a shorter upper body? Wear the skirt low on the hips.
- Fuller ankles? Choose an extra-long maxi-skirt – with a floor length  - or go for a midi-skirt.
- Fuller hips? The best choice is a clean A-line skirt, with minimal detailing, in a supple quality – this flatters and creates a feminine silhouette. Avoid heavy, drapey fabrics as they create a heavier silhouette.

Styling tip
- Uni-colors flatter and prints accentuate; go for a maxi-skirt in one color if you have fuller hips and thighs. Do you have a slim figure and less round shapes? Pick a maxi-skirt with a print.

SKIRTS AND DRESSES WITH A MAXI-LENGTH
(Styling) tips for all skirts:
- Optically lengthen your legs? Wear your top tucked into the skirt. Wear your skirt higher at the waist to optically lengthen your legs. Create this effect with a dress by adding a belt higher or lower at the waist.
- Choose the right shoes: heels lengthen your legs, but shoes with ankle straps shorten your legs, because they optically divide your legs into two sections.
- Create a longer body length? Choose skirts with a vertical print.
- Create a skirt look with a dress? Wear your dress underneath a chunky knit or oversized sweater – combine endlessly.
- Hide your belly? Camouflage your tummy by wearing a loose-fit top or sweater over your skirt instead of tucked-in. Avoid pleated skirts, because they create a voluminous silhouette at the belly and hips. Also, don’t wear a wide belt at belly height.
- Slimming effect? Skirts with a diagonal hemline or layered frills optically create a flattering and slimming look.
- Balance your look? Create a contemporary look by adding contrast to your look. Pair a pencil skirt with a loose-fit or boxy top and wear a voluminous skirt with a fitted top.
