3 brands to know for a more sustainable wardrobe

In this ever-changing world - where we’re becoming increasingly aware that we should take good care of Mother Nature - sustainable clothing is no longer optional, but a must. Let’s face it: the fashion industry, in which we work with so much love and passion, is the second most polluting industry worldwide, just after the oil industry. In this blog we will highlight three brands that are actively innovative in the field of sustainability: Filippa K, Closed and LaSalle. In what way? Quickly read on to discover more.

Obviously we select our brands by their design style, but also the brand story and production methods have to add up. Does the brand handle raw materials and produce consciously? Are the collections of high quality and timeless enough to wear multiple seasons? At all times, we want to avoid a wardrobe full of disposable fashion. We therefore choose quality over quantity by buying ‘slow-fashion’ styles. To us, this is the only way to build a wardrobe that’s both personal and sustainable.

The holistic approach of Filippa K
At Filippa K sustainability isn’t just a part of the company, it’s embedded in the brand’s DNA. In everything they do, Filippa K uses the framework of circular fashion. The goal for 2030 is to become fully transparent throughout their supply chain and to use nothing but sustainable and recyclable materials for all products. To do so, they are experimenting with their Front Runners collection where everything revolves around the life cycle of the product. From raw material to a second life, the collection is all about being inspired by the speeds of nature and its ability to create something new while protecting what exist. Do you no longer wear the garment? Then return it to Filippa K – they’ll recycle it to create something new without compromising quality.
Sustainable denim by Closed
Closed’s greatest passion is denim. Yet unfortunately, traditional methods of producing denim leave a lot of room for improvement, mainly in regard to water and chemical consumption. On the other hand, qualitative denim lasts for years and even gets more beautiful over time. Closed is continuously striving to improve their sustainable denim production. They developed the ‘A Better Blue’ line with Candiani, known to being the greenest denim mill in the blue world. Innovative ecological washing and dyeing methods are at the center of this collection, just as using cotton with the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) label - that’s committed to sourcing better cotton and invests in BCI farmers. Overall 50% less water, 25% less energy and 65% less chemicals are used. Quite a big step, but Closed is only getting started...
LaSalle’s alternative raw materials
The mission of Dutch brand LaSalle is to design ‘Responsible Fashion’. The production almost exclusively takes place in Europe to decrease environmental impact. Their mission is to have 70% of their clothing made from fabrics that are environmentally friendly by 2025. We hear you thinking; why not 100%? To guarantee clothing with a longer life span – which is of high importance for building a wardrobe – the use of synthetic fibers is almost inevitable. LaSalle increasingly makes use of fabrics such as Lyocell; a natural and strong fiber made of wood pulp. They also make use of soy textiles that are often referred to as natural cashmere. Soy is derived from food production waste is it is made from the hulls of soy beans. Win-win!
