Spring skin care: radiant skin in 6 steps

Spring is in the air! Time to wake up from your hibernation and brave the sunny weather with full energy. Dresses, skirts and tops get a prominent place in our wardrobe when the temperature rises, but have you thought about your skin care as well? Because while the winter season asks for rich and nourishing creams, spring requires a different approach. Read on and discover how to switch from a winter to spring routine to make your skin glow again after the gray winter months.

1. Big spring cleaning
A spring skin care routine requires a big clean. Gather all the creams, serums, toners, cleansers, and sunscreens you used before and check the expiration dates. Yes, beauty products also have a limited shelf life. Each package - usually next to the barcode - has an icon of a jar with a number. That number indicates how many months the product will last. Expired? Then it’s better to throw it away. No icon? Or, can’t remember when you bought the product? Smell, feel and look. When in doubt: trash can! And especially if it contains SPF. The SPF value in a product decreases every time the packaging is exposed to the sun's rays. After this cleaning round you will have enough room for new skincare!
2. Remove dead skin cells
Treat your skin with a thorough exfoliation at the beginning of spring to combat dull complexion and get rid of dead skin cells and flakes. Good exfoliating products contain lactic acid, enzymes and retinoids that have a positive effect on the production of collagen and stimulate cell renewal. By exfoliating, you remove the op layer of your skin, resulting in a smoother and fresher complexion. Exfoliating once or twice a week is enough to maintain a radiant glow.

Good to know: smooth skin cleared from dead skin cells absorbs the active ingredients from creams, serums and masks much better.
3. Change your moisturizer
As soon as it gets warmer outside, replace your heavy, hydrating creams and go for a lighter (gel) cream. In the cold winter months, your skin likes extreme nourishing creams that care for your dry skin, hydrate optimally and stimulate your natural oil production. In the spring, chances are your needs change, so choose a light moisturizer that allows your skin to breathe and gives you a natural glow while also hydrating.
4. Let your skin breathe
A thick layer of foundation not only looks unnatural in the spring, but your pores can also get clogged more easily due to the warmer weather, which can cause blackheads and pimples. A good option is to swap your high coverage foundation for a light BB cream or tinted moisturizer. Preferably one that, in addition to adding subtle color, also protects from the sun – so with SPF. This way you immediately start the day beautiful and protected. Besides, less coverage ensures that your tan and summer freckles remain visible. Win win!

But, if you find this natural look a bit too daring, there are also water-based foundations with just enough coverage. These have better breathing properties compared to oil-based foundations.
5. Sun protection is a must
You simply can’t do without good sun protection every season, but it’s especially welcome in spring. Because, no matter how soft the sun feels, these sun rays can still damage your skin. Even though the sun is not very warm yet, it is abundant on many days. Therefore, choose a day cream with an SPF factor or apply sunscreen every morning before your make-up and after your day cream. Not just on your face, but also think of your lips and your neck.
6. Eye cream
Everybody recognizes squinting because of bright sunlight. And of course, this always happens when you don’t have your sunglasses with you. To combat fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, it is important – especially during this time – to add a good eye cream to your routine. Good eye care contains soothing and nourishing properties that care for and protect the thin, delicate skin around the eyes.
